Join us as some of the best voices in Australian writing discuss the Stella Prize and the current climate of Australian women’s writing.

The Stella Prize is a major literary award celebrating Australian women’s writing, and championing diversity and cultural change. The prize is named after one of Australia’s iconic female authors, Stella Maria Sarah ‘Miles’ Franklin, and was awarded for the first time in 2013. Both nonfiction and fiction books by Australian women are eligible for entry.

Each year the Stella Prize is committed to recognising the best books by Australian women, both fiction and nonfiction. Their judging terms are that the winning book be: excellent, original and engaging. By raising the profile of women writers, and celebrating their achievements, they hope to erode the self-perpetuating cycle of underrepresentation that confronts all women writers – not least nonfiction writers. The Stella Prize believes that the best way to achieve this is to seek out and popularise excellence in women’s writing. They want the full range of women’s stories and women’s ideas to be valued and heard.

Our panel will be hosted by writer and academic, Alecia Simmonds, and will include authors Anna Clark (Private Lives, Public History), Fiona McFarlane (The High Places), Emily Maguire (Fishing for Tigers) and Sarah Ayoub (The Yearbook Committee).
